ProtonVPN NetShield Ad Blocker Explained - Built-in DNS Filtering

Pop-ups, trackers following every step, phishing pages disguised as login forms β€” these annoyances consume bandwidth and attention daily. ProtonVPN built its defense inside the VPN tunnel, using a DNS filtering engine called NetShield to block threats at domain resolution.

How NetShield Works

NetShield is ProtonVPN's built-in DNS-level filtering system. When your device tries to access a domain, the client first queries ProtonVPN's DNS server, where NetShield checks the domain against a malicious-domain database. Requests matching the blacklist are dropped, so ads and trackers never load.

Unlike browser ad-blockers, NetShield works at the system level, covering ads and trackers in mobile apps and desktop software, not just browsers.

Three Filter Levels

NetShield offers three levels: off, block malicious sites only, and block malicious sites plus ads and trackers. Users switch in the client with one click. The table below compares each level.

Measured Blocking Results

Ads and trackers often make up a large share of page weight. Official tests on major news, video and social sites show average page load times drop about 22% and mobile data usage about 18% with NetShield on. The table shows per-category results.

The Security Value

NetShield's more important role is blocking malicious domains. Phishing often impersonates banks or shops to steal passwords; NetShield blocks such domains before a connection forms. One real case: during a 2024 shopping promotion, NetShield blocked over one million access attempts to counterfeit domains within 24 hours, preventing massive user losses.

"NetShield unites visible cleanliness with invisible protection β€” the former saves data, the latter saves safety." β€” ProtonVPN product team

Summary

NetShield upgrades a VPN from an encrypted tunnel to a security gateway, accelerating and protecting at the DNS layer. It costs almost nothing to enable yet dramatically improves browsing and cuts phishing risk. Free download ProtonVPN and enable NetShield now.
